The Main Villages

Sermoneta

Located between the Lepini mountains and the Pontine plain, the old town preserves the appearance of the medieval village still intact within the city walls.
The symbol of the town is the Caetani castle which preserves a good part of the noble environments and a surprising walkway.
Walking through the alleys you come across the main monuments such as the church of S. Giuseppe and the cathedral of S. Maria Assunta.
Those with a sweet tooth will be able to delight themselves with the typical Sermonetani biscuits.
In the plain below is the garden of Ninfa considered among the most romantic in the world and defined as the Pompeii of the Middle Ages.
Not far away is the Cistercian abbey of Valvisciolo whose peculiarity is the presence of an enigmatic palindrome.

Fossanova

Inside a tiny medieval village is the Fossanova Abbey, considered the maximum expression of Italian Cistercian Gothic.
Despite being among the oldest Cistercian settlements, the complex keeps the original system intact.
The church, built in travertine, is divided into three naves covered by cross vaults.
From it you access the cloister overlooked by the chapter house and the refectory.
An illustrious guest of the abbey was St. Thomas Aquinas during the last days of his life.
In memory of his presence, a chapel dedicated to him can be visited.
The village also offers the possibility of a pleasant stop for the possible purchase of typical local products.

Fondi and Itri

Located in the plain of the same name at the foot of the Ausoni and Aurunci mountains, Fondi is worth a visit for the numerous historical testimonies scattered throughout its territory. In fact, the city preserves the layout of the Roman castrum through which you come across the castle and the churches of S. Maria and S. Pietro where the Western Schism was born. The walk cannot end without a stop at the Judea neighborhood.
The ancient Iter, today Itri owes its name to the fact that it was positioned to guard the route of the Appian Way. Looking up, you are struck by the size of the castle and the bell tower of the church of S. Michele Arcangelo. Itri was the birthplace of the most famous of brigands: Fra' Diavolo. A museum has been dedicated to him and to the phenomenon of brigandage.
